“Best Of” Classroom Furniture Tips


Ergonomically designed school furniture can offer significant benefits and contribute to students' learning success. School furniture must be adaptable because every child's body moves in its own way. Chairs should be designed to encourage movement. They should be equipped with a flexible seating surface that follows every change of body position and invites continuous motion.

During the evaluation process, take your classroom furniture for a test drive. Ask your dealer for several samples and distribute them throughout the classrooms. Get student and teacher feedback. They are, after all, the ones who will be using the product on a daily basis.

When organizing a classroom, less is more. Furniture should have at least one clear purpose—and preferably more than one—that is relevant to children's development and the curriculum. All furniture should be actively used for some part of each day—and preferably for most of each day. Children should be able to move safely and easily around any furniture in the classroom.

Desk shape has a new definition. No longer is an individual student desk always a rectangle. New options include trapezoids, hexagons, octagons and arcs from which to choose. Collaborative learning environments are creating the need for desks that can be used individually, in pairs, small groups, semi-circles or full circles as the lesson plans dictate.

It pays to do some homework about the manufacturer of school furniture, taking into account their years in business and whether they specialize in school furniture. Manufacturers that have a long-standing track record in the industry can provide more diverse product offerings and can offer customer testimonials and a perspective about the quality of the products they build.

One of the most important parts of your school furniture purchase should be the warranty, and you should take the time to review it prior to completing your purchase. It is important to know if your warranty is good for three years, five years, or a limited lifetime. Is the warranty just on parts, or does it cover fabric tears or worn areas, bent legs, or damaged arms?

Durability is always a primary consideration. Key features and benefits for your school's furniture would include: precision-welded tubular steel frames for lasting strength; polypropylene, polyethylene, or hard plastic seating components for long-term performance; and quality work surfaces – with either a high-pressure laminate finish or hard plastic construction – to resist scratching and warping.

When selecting classroom furniture, we all recognize the importance of examining product features and benefits, as well as carefully comparing prices. By contrast, other significant factors – including the manufacturing, delivery, and service capabilities of furniture suppliers – sometimes get overlooked. Supplier capabilities matter, because they are invariably reflected in the quality of the products you purchase and the services you receive.

The increasing demand for "green" products throughout our society has positively impacted not only classroom chairs and tables, but all school furniture. A decade ago, for instance, there were no Greenguard-certified classroom furniture lines. Now, certain manufacturers are working with Greenguard and other third-party IAQ certifiers to provide low-emitting seating, tables, and other furniture items.
