Construction is under way for the new $28.5 million Mother Mary Lange Elementary School in Baltimore.

JMT Architecture is providing architectural and interior design services for the 520-student school, the first new K-8 Catholic school in Baltimore City in more than 50 years.

The school is named for Mother Mary Lange, a pioneer in educating children of color. The school will be located across from the University of Maryland Baltimore and the University Medical Center.

The school’s location—on a prominent, underutilized site—presents an opportunity to construct a modern facility at the western gateway to the city’s downtown business core that is less than a mile from many major cultural, medical, educational, and nonprofit institutions.

The location leverages well-established university, corporate, institutional, and nonprofit partnerships to ensure superior academic programs and extended-day and enrichment initiatives.

The new 65,140-square-foot, dual-track Catholic school will be a 21st-century, state-of-the-art building three stories high.

The first floor will have a two-story entrance, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes, and administrative offices.

The second floor will encompass grades one through four and have four multipurpose areas.

A commons area, library/media center, kitchen and cafeteria, and a gym are all located on this floor, which can be combined for after-hours use.

A special entrance is located outside of the cafeteria to facilitate the after-hours use.

The third floor houses grades five through eight, with special rooms for music, art, science, and tech maker spaces.

The chapel will be located in the center and have a view of the cross, which will be displayed on outside of the front of the building.

Construction is expected to be completed in 2021.
